Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid that acts similarly to vitamins in the body. It serves as a co-enzyme in carbohydrate metabolism and is necessary for the production of acetyl CoA, a key metabolite in the process of converting glucose (blood sugar) into energy.
