Extended Information:
Q What is osteoporosis and how is it best prevented?
A Strong, healthy bones are essential for an active lifestyle; but without the right nutrients in the right amounts, bones can end up growing weaker and losing density. Over time, this can result in osteoporosis ? a disease in which bones become porous and brittle, breaking more easily, and taking longer to heal if damaged. Osteoporosis is increasingly common, affecting as many as 1 in 2 NZ women and nearly 1 in 3 NZ men over 60. The best way to prevent it is to start building bone density as early possible, by ensuring sufficient calcium and Vitamin D intake, and regular weight bearing exercise to strengthen bones. After menopause, bone mass can decline quite significantly due to the lowered levels of oestrogen (bone-protective hormone).
Q What are the main risk factors for osteoporosis?
A Risk factors include being female (especially post menopausal or of small build), a family history of osteoporosis, advanced age, low calcium intake, low vitamin D levels, cigarette smoking, and excessive alcohol or coffee intake.
Q Why is it important to start building bone mass early?
Q What is the RDI for calcium?
A The Australian Department of Health and Aging Guidelines recommend the following daily calcium intake to maintain bone health:
Q Why is calcium recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
