Vitamin D is often called the sunshine vitamin, because the body makes it through exposure to the sun's UV rays. As people take more care in the sun to reduce skin cancer risk, vitamin D deficiency has become more common. Older people in rest homes and those who are housebound are at particular risk, and there is evidence of mild deficiency in younger adults, particularly during winter. The more pigment there is in the skin, the less vitamin D is produced, so dark-skinned people, people who avoid the sun, and women who wear veils are at increased risk.
